EXHIBITION DATES: 7TH - 31ST OCTOBER
2024

VENUE: BIZZILLA ART GALLERY, MAPFRE MSV LIFE, TRIQ IL MALL, FLORIANA

Carbonaro invites us to ‘4Senses’ a solo abstract art exhibition. The immersive and thought-provoking works explore the sense of smell, interpreted through the artist’s personal experience and sensory journey. Stefan Carbonaro, who has anosmia, the total and complete loss of the sense of smell, creates a unique narrative that provokes how we perceive smell using the four other senses.

In ‘4Senses’ Stefan Carbonaro challenges the conventional reliance on the sense of smell to convey thoughts. In this multi sensory process, the artist produces a series of paintings to portray how the concept of smell is experienced in a life where it simply does not exist.

Carbonaro challenges the preconceived notions of sensory perception by questioning the very essence of smell and how interconnected our senses truly are. Without the sense of smell, the artist has developed a heightened awareness of how the remaining senses compensate and collaborate to form a deeper, nuanced understanding of the world.

"The absence of smell in my life has given me a unique
perspective on how I interpret the world. I use the other
senses not as substitutes but as complementary in the quest
to understand what it means to smell. This exhibition is a
journey through the multi-sensory landscape of smell,
reimagined."

Explore with your eyes the different hues and vibrant colours of your favourite flowers in a field, observe the golden crust of a freshly baked loaf of bread. Feel the textures of so many materials around us, feel the textured skin of an orange, feel the dry porous surface of a piece of charcoal or a burnt piece of wood, crumbling and leaving black marks on your hands. Listen to the rustling of leaves or the hissing of a boiling teapot, or a subtle splash of wine being poured in a glass. Taste all the complex flavours from earthy undertones to bright fruity notes

In creating 4Senses, I’m constantly reminded not to take any sense for granted. Every element—each smell, ingredient, and material—becomes a doorway into deeper feeling and connection. Through these paintings, I explore what it’s like to live without one sense and open up to the others in its absence. It’s made me realize just how lucky we are to experience a world so full of sensation, even in the smallest details of daily life. These everyday things are often right in front of us, yet, surrounded by so much noise and information, we can easily feel numb to them.

Unveiling 4Senses Exhibition at the Opening Reception of the 3rd. October 2024 - A second solo abstract art exhibition by Stefan Carbonaro

Working on this exhibition has been a journey of rediscovery, teaching me to appreciate and connect to those details that might otherwise be overlooked. 4Senses isn’t just about art or a specific sense—it’s about learning to see, feel, taste, and listen with intention. It’s about staying present, being grateful, and embracing the beauty in what we often take for granted.

I feel so fortunate that my path has led me to this point. Being an artist has allowed me to express and explore these experiences, translating them into something others can feel, too. It’s a privilege to share this vision and to reconnect with what it means to truly experience the world.
